Noor ul Islam Mosque was founded in 1978 by the Muslim community of Bury. The mosque initially occupied just one floor on Yarwood Street.
Today the mosque consists of the entire building, alongside Maqam al-Arba’in, a dedicated women’s centre, and Dar us Salam, a community centre.

THE MAQAM – WOMENS CENTRE
A dedicated space for women, providing Qur’an classes for girls aged 6 to 16 and other classes for women. Please contact us for current class details.
DAR-US-SALAM COMMUNITY CENTRE
The centre was established to provide a space for the community to hold religious and non-religious gatherings. Contact the mosque for further information.
Our services & activities
Supporting every stage of life.
Children’s education
Our teachers and volunteers introduce children to the Arabic alphabet and Qur’an reading, alongside the articles of faith and Islamic prayer. Children progress through five classes, learning tajweed and essential Islamic knowledge. A dedicated Hifdh teacher supports those wishing to memorise the Qur’an. Please contact us for current admissions and class times.
Adult education
The mosque offers Arabic language and Fiqh classes taught in English by qualified teachers. Please contact the mosque for current course information, fees and entry requirements.
School visits
We welcome visits from local schools. Please email letterbox@noorulislam.org to arrange a convenient time for a visit.
Interfaith
Since 2003, Noor ul Islam has worked with the Rumi Spiritual and Educational Centre to promote dialogue with Christian and Jewish communities in Bury, working towards a harmonious existence with all members of the community.
Marriage & Nikah
The mosque provides a setting for Islamic marriage ceremonies, with the Imam available to officiate at the mosque or another agreed venue. Please contact us to discuss arrangements, the Nikah form and current fees.
Funeral support
Mosque staff can help families with the procedures needed to prepare the deceased for the last rites. The mosque has on-site storage and ghusl facilities and works closely with local Muslim funeral directors.
Bi-monthly khatams ↗
These gatherings share the lives, teachings and wisdom of the Sufi masters with a new generation. The programme is mainly in English and includes Qur’an recitation, nasheeds, reflections, collective salawat and dua, followed by food. Families and people of other faiths are welcome. Please contact the mosque for the next gathering.
